MONDAY
The Daily Express report on Joe Ledley, who put Cardiff City into the FA Cup Final yesterday with a 1-0 win over fellow Championship side Barnsley. Who ever thought we'd be saying that? The Daily Mirror celebrate Cardiff's success, with Dave Jones saying that taking them to the Cup Final is the highlight of his career. Jones certainly isn't ready to let Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp enjoy his big Final day, telling The Sun: "I'm going to knock him out. It is anyone's game and it will be open - this will be good for the FA Cup."
It was a heartbreaking end to a famous Cup run for Barnsley, says The Independent. Also suffering was Rio Ferdinand, who picked up an injury against Middlesbrough, but how costly will it be for Manchester United, ask the Daily Star. The Daily Mail report on the 'sudden turbulence' that hit United's title charge yesterday in the 2-2 draw at the Riverside.
The Guardian have the day's strangest story (also in the Mail as an EXCLUSIVE), claiming that Ronaldinho's brother and agent Roberto de Assis Moreira was given the VIP treatment by Manchester City (!) on Saturday. Could it really happen?
TUESDAY
Arsene Wenger's claims that Arsenal can still win the double this season have been met with some amusement by the papers, with the Daily Mirror calling him an April Fool and pointing out that you can get odds of 125-1 on that 'miracle' at the bookies. The Daily Mail are in similarly mocking mood about Wenger's claims, pointing out that they have won only one of their last six games.
The Independent are a little more balanced in their coverage: "The power of positive thinking had the Arsenal manager in its thrall when he arrived at Anfield yesterday on a run of 11 games that have yielded only two victories." The Daily Telegraph say that while Wenger is in bullish mood, tonight's match represents a make-or-break last chance for them.
The Guardian point out that Rafael Benitez is in a similar position to Wenger: "Delirium or despair awaits Anfield tonight but Rafael Benitez has insisted that his Liverpool reign cannot be judged on the Champions League quarter-final with Arsenal."
WEDNESDAY
The Daily Mail report on another FAMOUS EUROPEAN NIGHT AT ANFIELD, with Liverpool beating Arsenal 4-2 to reach another Champions League semi-final against Chelsea, but there was more yet penalty controversy overshadowing the game. The Independent focus on that, with Ryan Babel going down under a fairly soft challenge from Kolo Toure barely seconds after Arsenal seemed to have won the tie. Arsene Wenger was not amused.
In The Guardian, Wenger says: "The game was over so be out is down to a dodgy decision, I believe, from the referee as much as it was a lack of concentration straight away after getting back to 2-2." 'Furnace' might be stretching a bit as a description of an Anfield atmosphere that was tense more than raucous for most of the game, but The Times were impressed anyway.
The Daily Mirror were also blown away by 'another magical Anfield Euro night' and pay tribute to Liverpool's never-say-die spirit in this competition. The Daily Star report on both Liverpool's win and Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Fenerbahce, which sets up yet another clash between the two sides in the semi-final.
THURSDAY
The Daily Mail report on Manchester United's progression into the Champions League semi-finals with Carlos Tevez's second half header enough to seal a 1-0 win over Roma. Tevez celebrated by lifting up his shirt to reveal a Happy Birthday message to his brother Ariel, but the real message being sent out by was by his team, reports the Daily Telegraph.
That message is in the Daily Star as United go into their semi-final clash with Barcelona on a high after setting a new Champions League record for consecutive home wins. The Daily Mirror celebrate the presence of three English teams in the semis as Sir Alex Ferguson says: "We have something really special here at this club at the moment."
The Daily Mail use words like 'epic' and 'mouthwatering' to describe the excitement already mounting ahead of two clashes between United and Barca. The Daily Express are up to their usual tricks with Harry Harris claiming this story as an exclusive even though it's in most of the other papers, with Karren Brady and David Sullivan being arrested by police investigating football corruption. The EXCLUSIVE part seems to be a very vague phone conversation with Sullivan last night.
FRIDAY
The anarchy at Anfield continues in the Daily Express as they report on the new war between co-owner Tom Hicks and chief executive Rick Parry after the American tycoon damanded Parry's resignation, only to be told that he won't be getting it. Madness... The Times say: "They may have reached the Champions League semi-finals, but Liverpool were heading towards meltdown at boardroom level last night as the tensions between rival factions in the club's hierarchy escalated."
The Independent say that Hicks has no power to force Parry out of the club, so the chief exec is going nowhere. The Daily Mail quote Parry's statement: "It is my intention to remain focused on the job of serving Liverpool FC to the best of my abilities at this very important time of our season." The Daily Mirror say that the friction that is tearing the club apart could lead to Rafael Benitez deciding to walk away in the summer.
Meanwhile, The Sun report on another club in a little turmoil as Chelsea move to sign David Villa for
