Neil Alexander began his professional career at Stenhousemuir in 1996. In two years with the Scottish club he made over 40 appearances and attracted the interest of Livingston who signed him in 1998.
A further 60 appearances followed over the next three years as he quickly forged a reputation as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in Scotland.
It was no surprise then when he signed for Cardiff City in 2001. He enjoyed his longest stay at any one club with the Welsh side, staying six years until 2007. He played over 200 times during this period, but signed for Ipswich Town in 2007.
His time at Portman Road was short though. After immediately becoming first choice keeper with the club, he was snapped up by Rangers in January 2008. He made his debut in February following a sending-off for Allan McGregor and quickly made an impression.
Indeed, so impressed was Walter Smith, that Alexander frequently stepped into the number one jersey, playing in an Old Firm game and proving vital in the semi-final penalty shoot-out victories in the UEFA Cup and Scottish Cup.
