In early September 2006, Wigan Athletic were finally given the go-ahead by FIFA to complete the signing of Scotland defender Andy Webster following his exit from Hearts.

The 24-year-old was cleared to leave the Jambos, having handed in a transfer request soon after the end of 2005/06.

After making just a handful of appearances in Wigan's tumultuous 2006/07 season, Webster was loaned out to Rangers until the end of the 07/08 campaign, and after a string of impressive performances the deal was made permanent in June 2008.
