THE ESSENTIAL

Rangers boss Walter Smith has no idea what his future holds beyond the summer - but will not retire before he's ready just to finish on a high.

Rangers manager Walter Smith was relieved to win a point from a tough encounter with Motherwell. Kris Boyd's 80th minute strike forced a 1-1 draw for the visitors and Smith said: "We were poor in the first half. In the second 45 minutes, we picked up and were far better. Motherwell started very brightly. We knew that would happen and we didn't have any great reaction to that in the first 45 minutes. After the first-half performance, it was good to get a point."

Rangers manager Walter Smith hailed Steven Davis after the midfielder scored the opening goal in the 2-0 Scottish League Cup semi-final victory over St Johnstone. "He's been playing extremely well," Smith said. "It is asking a lot of him, but every game we have we are relying a lot on his energy. I don't know what he's done, but he's been adding goals to his performances at the present moment, which obviously we're delighted with."

Sporting Lisbon have expressed an interest in Pedro Mendes amid reports Rangers could sell the midfielder to finance a new deal for Kris Boyd.

Goalkeeper Neil Alexander has revealed he will consider quitting Rangers if he continues to play second fiddle to Allan McGregor.

Kevin Thomson believes the Scottish Football Association are unlikely to find a better candidate for the Scotland job than Walter Smith.

The Old Firm should reconcile themselves once and for all with staying in Scotland, according to SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster.

Premier League clubs have overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to allow SPL giants Celtic and Rangers to join England's top tier.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has become the latest Premier League boss to back the Old Firm's bid to join the competition.

Madjid Madjid Bougherra insists he has no intention of leaving Rangers amid talk he may be sold in January to ease mounting debts at Ibrox.
