FOOTBALL TRANSFER NEWS

Newcastle spark Barton scramble

Newcastle have taken the shock decision to allow Joey Barton to leave on a free transfer – sparking a mad scramble between some of England's top clubs, including Arsenal, Man United and Tottenham, to line up talks for the midfielder. The Magpies are said to have grown tired of the fiery midfielder’s recent attitude and outspokenness - especially on Twitter, where he has accused the club’s board of penny-pinching. The former Man City star has only 12 months left to run on his current contract, and despite pleas to stay the Geordie outfit tried to sell him in July for a reduced fee.

City back in for Nasri

Manchester City are ready to make a £22million bid for Samir Nasri in the next 48 hours. Sources close to City were last night adamant they will slap in a "take it or leave it" offer for Arsenal's French midfielder. And SunSport understands there is growing confidence that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger and his board have accepted they are fighting a losing battle to hold on to the unsettled star. City officials have been given encouraging signs that Arsenal finally want to bring things to a head and are reluctantly ready to sanction a deal.

Swansea set for shock Trezeguet swoop

Swansea are set for a sensational swoop to sign French striker David Trezeguet. The former Juventus star is prepared to snub a move back to his native France for a crack at the Premier League. The 33-year-old is a free agent following his departure from Spanish side Hercules, who were relegated from La Liga last season, and Swansea have made the first moves to sign him. Former World Cup winner Trezeguet, who played 71 times for France, scoring 34 goals, saw a move back to Italy with Napoli break down last month.
