Brazilian striker Jo started his career at local club Corinthians, having grown up in Sao Paulo. He quickly earned a reputation as one of the country's top young talents and moved to CSKA Moscow in 2005.
He flourished in Moscow, with his reputation growing after some star performances in the Champions League, sparking rumours that he would move to the Premier League, with Manchester City seemingly leading the chase.
His international career though was in limbo after just one appearance, due to a row with national team coach Dunga.
He joined City in July 2008 for what is believed to be a club record fee of around £19m, becoming Mark Hughes' first signing at Eastlands.
However, he struggled to settle at City, and found himself on the fringes until February 2009 when he left to join Everton on loan. He found his feet at Goodison Park, helping them finish the season strongly. In July 2009, he renewed his loan for the duration of the 2009/10 season.
