Gardner signed for Tottenham Hotspur in Jauary 2000 from Port Vale in a £1million transfer. The youngster is a tall, elegant defender who can also play in midfield. Having broken his way into the first team set up, Gardener had an outstanding game in front of the TV cameras during his first full season in London - in the Worthington Cup Semi-final clash against rivals Chelsea. A game in which an impressive Spurs side cruised to a 5-1 victory.
He then recovered admirably from a knee ligament injury sustained on the last day of 2001/02 to further enhance his reputation last term. During the 2002/03 campaign he was given 13 first team starts and scored a dramatic last minute winner against West Ham at the Lane.
He also made it into David Platt's England Under-21 squad and is definitely one to watch over the next few years.
After putting the injury nightmare of his previous seasons behind him, Gardner went on to become one of Tottenham's most consistent performers during the troubled 2003/04 season. Ever present in the side he also made the step up to the senior England squad, playing 45 minutes of the friendly against Sweden.
His 2004/05 campaign, however, was disrupted once again by injuries to his knee and foot which hindered him and meant he could never quite build up any momentum.
He played 24 games and scored once all in all and his injury woes continued into the 2005/06 season, during which he played only eighteen games.
Injury hit once more in 2006/07 as he made only 16 appearances, and he continued to struggle in the 07/08 campaign.
In January 2008, he joined Everton on loan for the rest of the season.
