It was a day to remember for Hoops fans Gary McAdams and Gary McAlinden as their mates joined them for a fantastic football experience at Celtic Park. The guys had won the chance to take part in a full 90 minute game of football at the home of their heroes through a competition here on Carling.com, and each was allowed to bring a squad of 16 guys to play.

MATCH REPORT

The teams arrived at Celtic Park to find ex-pros Andy Walker and Tosh McKinlay there to manage the teams, and give them some expert advice on how to give a winning performance. Their team kit was all named and numbered and waiting for them in the home and away dressing rooms, and a match photographer was there to capture all the action.

Both teams started brightly, and looked quite evenly matched. The home team seemed to have a bit more up front though, and on 16 minutes Barry Kimmet hit the back of net. Goal number two came in 25 minutes from Mark Tait, and just before half-time the home team made it 3-0 with a shot from John Coll into the bottom-right corner. The away team had managed a few shots on goal, but there wasn’t enough accuracy to make them count.

The second half started better for the away team with a goal from Gavin McGrillen bringing them back into the game. Chances followed for both sides, but at around 80 minutes Mark Tait scored his second for the home team from a free-kick 20 yards out. Shortly after, the away goalie Daniel Harvey made a heroic clearance off the line, and then Gavin McGrillen scored again for the away team to bring the score to 4-2. But the home side were too strong, and in the closing minutes Mike Kelly finished things off with a fifth goal for the home team to make it 5-2.

Winning manager Andy Walker said: "Great effort from my team today, I was really pleased. They gave away one or two easy chances early on, but played some good football with some composed finishes for the goals. I'd like to thank my assistant coaches Scott McCorry and Mikey Moynihan for their help, and I'm glad we're leaving today as winners as that was the plan from the start."

Tosh McKinlay, away team manager said: "The team played well today, but it's all about scoring goals and the home team had more pace up front than us. There wasn't much in it, we had some good possession, just couldn't finish it off with a goal. It was a decent performance though, I was pleased with the lads."

Each manager picked a Carling Man of the Match from their team, with Andy Walker picking out captain Steven Burns, and Tosh choosing double-scorer Gavin McGrillen.

Celtic captain Stephen McManus stopped by to meet the guys and hand over the medals, and the trophy. He said: "It's excellent that Carling give fans the chance to play here. It's a great stadium, a fantastic pitch, and a privilege for me to play here, so I'm sure the guys all had a brilliant time today."

Away team captain Gary McAlinden was still smiling at the end. He said: "What a brilliant experience, even if we did lose! It's a really big park out there, it was hard work, but we all really enjoyed playing here."

Steven Burns, home team captain said: "It was an honour to play here, I’m very proud of all my team mates and the effort they put in. We're all Celtic fans so it means a lot to us to walk in the shadows of our heroes. Thank you!"
