Steven Caldwell

A proven Premier League defender, tough-tackling Steven Caldwell established himself with Newcastle United after breaking through the Magpies youth ranks. Frustrated by a lack of starts at St James Park he found himself loaned to Blackpool, Bradford and Leeds United before sealing a permanent switch to Sunderland in 2004.

The durable Scot held down a regular place in the Black Cats' Championship-winning back four and played for the Wearsiders until signing for the Clarets in 2006.

Though his first season was disrupted by injury he has shown enough experience and leadership to be named club captain and is now one of the most reliable performers in Owen Coyle's side.
