Despite having played for Eredvisie giants PSV Eindhoven, Van der Schaaf's most consistent performances came for Vitesse Arnhem. The rangy midfielder started his career with Arnhem, where he won plenty of admirers, including then coach Guus Hiddink.

Hiddink persuaded Van der Schaaf to switch to the Phillips Stadium in the summer of 2002, although a lack of appearances led to a return to Arnhem in 2005.

Similar frustrations have resurfaced at Burnley, with Van der Schaaf struggling to establish himself in Owen Coyle's side and finding himself loaned to Danish side Brondby in February of 2009.
