McLeish vows to attack

Friday 2 May 2008

Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish has no intention of playing for a draw at Fulham when the two relegation rivals meet at Craven Cottage.

Both sides go into the game in the bottom three and defeat for either team would almost certainly condemn them to Championship football next season.

A draw would suit City more, but McLeish insists he wants to come away from the capital with three points.

He said: "We're going down there to win although not winning doesn't rule you out, depending on other results.

"Fulham are now in a situation where they must win the game, whereas in the last two or three weeks I'm sure Roy Hodgson has said to them 'you've absolutely nothing to lose, just go for it'.

"Maybe they'll be thinking about things differently but I don't really concern myself about the opposition, I'm more interested in how we approach it.

"If the players come off the pitch and the Birmingham fans are applauding their performance levels that's all you can ask for. We'll attack, but you've got to play to your strengths as well.

"If I had Ferdinand and Vidic at the back then I could probably go all guns blazing knowing that I've got extreme pace there. So you have to play according to the players you have at your disposal."
