West Brom won the race to sign highly-rated Luton Town central defender Curtis Davies on summer transfer deadline day in a club record £3million deal.
The 20-year-old was reported to be a target for Birmingham and West Ham but to the delight of Baggies fans and boss Bryan Robson, he opted to sign a four-year contract at The Hawthorns.
"I believe he's got a really good future in the game," Robson told the club's official website.
"Although he's still got a lot of development ahead of him, he's exactly the type of player I want to keep bringing into this club.
"He'll fit in really nicely with all the other good young players we've got here, like Nathan Ellington, Robert Earnshaw, Richard Chaplow and Darren Carter.
"We want to keep bringing really good young players into this club and Curtis is one of the most outstanding young centre-halves I've seen for some time."
He quickly became a favourtie at the Baggies and was even made their captain for a brief time.
However, after the club was relegated at the end of the 2005/06 season, Davies' frustration at life in the Championship became palpable and in the 2006/07 season he put in a number of transfer requests.
Inevitably, with the Baggies failing to gain promotion at the end of that campaign, he moved on in August 2007, joining Aston Villa on a season-long loan.
