Charles Dickens wrote The Pickwick Papers while staying here, in an historic building which is the oldest pub in Bath. The walls are plastered and painted with that traditional white pub colour, and with four separate, low-ceilinged, but spacious rooms to choose from there is plenty of space to roam. All the same, it still gets heaving on Friday and Saturday evenings with pre-clubbers getting warmed-up for a big night out. It's a straightforward pub serving a decent choice of standard dishes, such as Barnsley lamb chop and sausage and mash.
